Global streaming of a prestigious film event (Oscars) – front-end support in Angular

Background

In 2015, a Polish IT company was commissioned to prepare a streaming platform for one of the most prestigious events in the film industry – the Oscars. The project was carried out for an American agency responsible for the digital live streaming of the event.

  • Deadline: early 2015, to be ready before the official gala (February).
  • Reach: global broadcast with an audience of millions worldwide (almost 190 countries).

TTMS was invited to cooperate as a subcontractor providing a team of front-end developers.

Challenges

Huge load on the site:
  • The Oscars are one of the most watched events in the world, attracting millions of viewers live. It was crucial to ensure stability and fast loading of the interface even with sudden increases in traffic.
  • Minimum delay was required between the live broadcast and the final player.
Short time frame:
  • The project was to be ready well before the official date of the gala (February 2015). The implementation deadline was therefore very short, which required maximum commitment and flexibility.
Subcontracting and teamwork:
  • TTMS was responsible for the front-end part – this required close cooperation with the main contractor and the creative agency that designed the visual layer.

Scope of Action and Solution

Providing a team of front-end specialists

  • TTMS provided experienced front-end developers (technology: Angular).
  • The team focused on implementing key modules, such as:
    • User interface (UI) layer for the video player.
    • Interactive elements (e.g. comments, nomination information, real-time notifications).
    • Performance optimization (cache, lazy loading, code minimization).

Technologies used

  • Angular
  • HTML5/CSS3 and standard front-end automation tools from that era (Grunt/Gulp/Webpack).
  • Integration with an external CDN (Content Delivery Network)

Methodology and cooperation model

  • Remote and on-site work (some TTMS developers worked at the client’s office, some remotely).
  • Communication and project management led by the main contractor (Intive) – TTMS participated in daily/weekly stand-ups, reporting progress.
  • Implementation time: several months (end of 2014 – beginning of 2015), to make it before the gala in February.

Results and Benefits

Attendance success

  • The broadcast of the gala attracted a multi-million online audience, which required high stability and scalability.
  • The streaming player in Angular worked smoothly, without any significant downtime or failures.

Prestige and recognition

  • Participation in the Oscars project provided both the main contractor and TTMS with the opportunity to demonstrate their competence in the area of high-traffic front-end development.
  • The partnership with the American agency paved the way for further projects in the area of media and entertainment.

Fast implementation and team flexibility

  • Effective coordination between TTMS and the main contractor allowed for a fully functional platform to be launched in a short time.
  • Thanks to this, viewers could enjoy live broadcasts with minimal delay, which was crucial for this type of global event.

Experience in international projects

  • The TTMS team has gained valuable experience working on a project with high media exposure and high risk (millions of viewers at once).
  • We have developed competences in optimizing Angular applications for global traffic.

Summary and Next Steps

Although the project was a short-term subcontract, its effects became an important point in the TTMS portfolio. We proved that:

  • We can efficiently create and optimize front-end applications in Angular, even with very restrictive deadlines.
  • We are able to deliver qualified development teams and integrate them into the client’s existing design structure.
  • We managed the requirements for high availability and scale (millions of online viewers) for one of the most prestigious events of the year.

Currently (after 2015) TTMS is developing further projects, still offering comprehensive front-end and back-end teams, as well as consulting on the architecture of large-scale solutions.
