Salesforce launches vaccine for paperwork

Salesforce introduces Intelligent Document Automation (IDA), which will help healthcare companies and institutions digitize their document management processes.

The smart form reader is to be the driving engine of this functionality. This is the answer to the age-old problem of having to manually enter data. Any incoming documents, including typed or handwritten forms (such as patient referrals) that may have arrived digitally or on paper (by fax or mail), will now be automatically analyzed and queued for review, analysis and processing, in Salesforce Health Cloud.

There are four goals:

  1. minimizing administrative burdens,
  2. minimizing the risk of costly errors,
  3. increasing employee productivity,
  4. improving the comfort of patients.

IDA for Health Cloud helps suppliers, payers, pharmaceutical companies and medical device organizations simplify the way they process and manage their documents through the following features:

  • Unifying the full document life cycle on a single platform – Healthcare organization staff can receive, process and track all patient forms in one place, eliminating the need to switch between different environments.
  • Intelligent Routing – The form reader from Amazon Textract goes beyond optical character recognition (OCR) and uses machine learning to read incoming documents, ultimately helping staff to automatically guide them to the right place and enabling, for example, early dispensing of a patient’s prescription.
  • Standardized Checklists – Customers can apply a preconfigured checklist of items to be filled in each time they receive documents such as patient referrals or forms. For example, before enrolling a patient into the program to conduct a drug study, a pharmaceutical company can ensure that all essential items such as patient consent and personal information are collected, recorded and tracked.

The intelligent form reader, which is based on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, is powered by Textract, part of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest and most popular cloud computing in the world. AWS launched Textract in 2019, using machine learning to allow organizations to automatically extract content from tables, forms, and web pages. In 2020, AWS introduced additional support for handwriting recognition as well as many new languages.

The ability to use the intelligent reading of forms module is payable and requires the purchase of an additional license for Textract in the Salesforce environment.
